A significant percentage of peer-reviewed journal rejections occur before manuscripts even reach reviewers. Use this pre-submission checklist to audit your article against international journal publishing standards.
Pre-Submission Audit Checklist
1. Title & Abstract Compliance
Verify that the title is concise (< 15 words) and contains primary search keywords. Ensure abstract meets word limits (typically 150–250 words) and follows structured headings if required.
2. IMRaD Structural Integrity
Check that Introduction clearly outlines the research gap, Methods provide sufficient reproducibility detail, Results report data without editorializing, and Discussion compares findings against published literature.
3. Citation Concordance
Audit every in-text citation against the reference list. Ensure zero phantom citations (cited in text but missing from references, or in references but unmentioned in text).
4. Nomenclature & Technical Abbreviations
Define every abbreviation at first mention in the main text (independent of the abstract). Ensure chemical formulas, gene symbols, and mathematical variables adhere to disciplinary nomenclature.
5. High-Resolution Figures & Legends
Verify that all charts, micrographs, and diagrams are rendered at minimum 300 DPI with readable axis labels and standalone descriptive captions.
